Gone are the days for local based businesses when we can just throw up some anchor text links on an external shady site and get on the top of Google.  Nowadays, Google wants good content and high authority links.

I provide some SEO tips to get you ranked and stay ranked.

1) Have correct business addresses

With Google placing more emphasis on maps and location for local based businesses it is vital for our business addresses to be accurate all over the internet.

This seems obvious but sometimes when we move we forget to update our address online, or just update a few. With different addresses all over the web Google does not trust are correct address and consequenlty just doesn’t bother ranking us.

Start with having an accurate address on Google my business and then use that address for all third party directories.

2) Make sure your my business Google account is update with correct categories

In the past couple of years Google has placed a lot more emphasis on location, search proximity and categories for ranking local businesses.

Make sure all your business listings are in the right categories on Google and other online directories.  Don’t overdo it by having too many categories. Place more emphasis on your core service categories and service areas.

3) Guest posting

Google puts a lot of value in links from high authority sites.

Look at top industry blogs, see who is accepting guest authors and reach out for guest posting opportunities. Make sure to have a link back to your site in your article.  Even if it’s no follow link the guest post will increase traffic to your site, generate some possible leads and create instant credibility.

4) Use long-tail keywords

If we don’t have thousands of backlinks ranking for a heavily searched term, it is almost impossible to rank on the first page for that term. But using long-tail keywords(4 words or more) it becomes a lot easier.

To come up with some possible blog posts using long-tail keywords think about your sales cycle what does a potential customer Google.

For example a renovation contractor might write a blog post on building permits for his service area. A homeowner thinking of doing a renovation in that area could do some research on building permits and find your article.

5) Create round up posts

A good round up post might have up 10 experts lending their knowledge on a certain topic i.e. favorite blogging tools.

To create a roundup post we first need to get friendly with others in the industry. We can do this through blog comments, twitter dm’s, and facebook likes. When the time is right ask key influencer’s if they would like to take part in a roundup post.

When the roundup post is finished and posted. We can contact our influencer’s and ask for a share. Often times this can lead good links from very respectable websites with high domain authority.

6) Use infographics

Creating infographics are a tried and true way to get backlinks. People are always looking for images, videos, charts, infographics and other media to include in blog posts and a good infographic can get lots of shares.

Displaying your infographic on sites such as Twitter, Reddit and Pinterest allowing others to embed your infographic on their site.

7) Use best of posts

A best of post is a type of blog post where the author shares good resources for a particular topic.

By looking through industry blogs or searching Google we can find best of posts.  Reach out to the author and suggest adding our link.

A follow, blog comment or even adding an article by the best of post, might be a good idea before reaching out.

Always think about building relationships with other authors.  Leveraging content of influencer’s in your niche is a great way to get way to get exposed.

8) Broken links

Websites go under and url’s can change frequently. Often times this leads to broken links on reputable sites. Just like best up posts we can search the internet for resources directories and then use check my links plugin for Chrome. We will able to see what links are broken suggest replacing that link with our own link.

9) Use intriguing titles and meta descriptions

A good title and and meta description that solves a specific problem and or relevant to the searcher will produce good click through rates and low bounce back ratios. This tells Google we are relevant to the search term and often lead to our page moving up Google rankings.

10) Use imagery, charts, videos and embedded tweets

It is no secret posts with imagery, charts and videos get more links than basic text post. It is vital to have good media and we can find good imagery at Pixabay, YouTube and Twitter. add commentary to the embedded image or tweet. Become the one stop shop on information on your niche.

Don’t discredit video or image searches on Google. It might to link overall however a lot of people will need images, infographics and videos for content and will search, embed and or link your content.

11) Use snippets

Over the past year Google has increased use of snippets and snippets have become a good way to improve google rankings.  A snippet is the first box when searching for something. For example, by searching what is online marketing we will see a snippet with a paragraph that explains what is online marketing.

For us a might be a good idea to create a what is post.  Make sure our title includes the what is and so does the first H1 tag.

12) Stat posts

Bloggers are always looking for stats. Creating stat posts that are intriguing and searchable will allow other bloggers and news reporters to find our post and link to it. Getting a link from a newspaper can lead to good link juice

13) App or form that creates value and others will link to

Sometimes things like financial calculators, forms and or quizzes s provide value to our ideal visitors resulting in shares and links.

14) Participate in forums

Popular forums such as Quora recieve massive traffic.  Regularly check popular forums in your niche and provide links back to your content, this will expose your article to thousands of people.  Remember were all generating content and external links from time to time. Make your article is the go to for that topic in your niche.

In practice, find popular topics or questions on Buzzsumo or Quora and generate good piece of content on that topic. Then link to your article from popular forums, not as spam, but as a helpful content.

15) Consistently update your blog

Google likes updates content. Have a newsletter, blog regularly become a category authority and reap the long-term rewards. Have people come to you instead of having to make dreaded sales calls.

16) Ask Customers to give reviews

Reviews are becoming more critical to Google’s algorithm.  Make sure to ask customers for a review.
